Welcome to SVA YOGA!
TOP

What is Yoga, really? Here you can get familiar with many of the aspects of this mesmerizing philosophy. Hatha Yoga (one of the original Yoga branches), for example, relates body and mind as a means for us to enjoy life under new perspectives while learning how to cope with its challenges in a wise manner.

This website complements the Hatha Yoga classes you can join anytime*. The classes with me offer a combination of the Yoga philosophy (based on Yoga scriptures and its interpretations), Yoga postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), relaxation and withdraw of the senses (yoga nidra) and meditation.

Feel free to ask any questions, to make a comment or book a class. The classes can take place at your home, workplace or any other available space. The classes can be private or you can double with a friend or even organize or join a little group of people.

THE YOGA PERSPECTIVE

Large Heading

Image: The Acrobat - Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso was one of the most important influences to the XX century's art, and one of his quotes (as below) inspired me to associate this idea to the significance and practice of Yoga.

"EVERYTHING YOU CAN IMAGINE IS REAL"

Highly recognized as an avid creator, Picasso defines in this sentence the power he felt inside of him to materialize his ideas, but, the most interesting part is that we can use this quote to start understanding what Yoga is. This affirmation is the perfect starting point for the appreciation of this fascinating philosophy of life that was created and developed to help us transform our lives for better.

Yoga is an ancient knowledge born in India that has been guiding people for more than 4.000 years, teaching them how to take charge of their own and enduring happiness. A quite remarkable cultural treasure.

The significance of this quote from the Yoga point of view is that the Universe (at least the way we see it) is nothing more than the projection of what we have inside of us (our beliefs, fears, doubts, dreams, etc). Therefore, we can make things manifest in our lives depending only on how we feed our minds...Depending on the type of  “lenses” that we use to look at things, things might seem remarkably different. A positive or negative weight depends only on the significance that we "decide" give to circumstances.

This awareness over our own vision is considered to be one of Yoga's higher powers (siddhis). To develop this mastery through Yoga means having power and control over our life's reality, and realize that the responsibility over our personal comfort and happiness lay only in our own hands. Again, it is  all a question of perspective, as said in the quote below selected from an ancient Yoga scripture:

" This is the path belonging to Shankara*. Here the pain becomes pleasure, poison becomes nectar, and the world that chains the soul becomes liberation"

(U. Stotra 20,12)

A deeper look into ourselves (or committed self knowledge according to the Yoga teachings) allows us to discover who we really are regardless of the external influences (including family ones...). As we set free from limiting beliefs about ourselves we become the masters of our True Self, naturally transforming our lives, and living our personal truth. The truth that strongly emerges from within, possibly with a terrifying force, capable of conquering all obstacles and resistance without any sign of fear of the inevitable changes, for better.

The intention of the texts and subjects of this site is to encourage and to develop the Yoga perspective in our lives. A new vision which is meant to free us from the veils of illusion and suffering while expanding the horizons of our perception beyond duality and conflict.

*Shiva is an Indian deity considered to be the great Lord of Yoga, and Shankara is one of its many versions, being this one “the donner of blessings”.

Warm Lemon Water

Chronic high acidity levels is in the body is known as acidosis. Acidosis is common in our society mostly due to the typical American diet, which is far too high in acid-producing animal products (e.g., meat, eggs and diary), and far too low in alkaline-producing foods (e.g., fresh vegetables). Additionally, we eat acid-producing processed foods (e.g., white flour and sugar) and drink acid-producing beverages (e.g., coffee and soft drinks). We use too many drugs which are acid forming; and, we use artificial chemical sweeteners that are extremely acid forming. The increasing number of food additives and pesticide residues are putting so much strain on our body, it is no wonder we have so many sick people nowadays.

Besides balancing our diet and avoiding the consumption of artificial and toxic products, we can use a very simple recipe to help our body purify itself. It is the lemon water.

The morning time is when we are most dehydrated since we have been asleep for many hours, and we have lost water through breathing. Additionally the liver does most of its work overnight and many toxins are then released. That is when the lemon water comes in.

Because lemon juice’s atomic structure is similar to the digestive juices found in the stomach, it tricks the liver into producing quality bile. The vitamin C in the lemon juice helps produce glutathione, which helps the liver to process toxins and eliminates them.

The warmth of the water also promotes peristalsis, the contraction  of muscles in the colon that keeps waste and fat moving along de digestive tract and out of the body for elimination. Also, lemon juice contains the minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, sodium, and manganese, which makes it highly alkalizing to the body. Lemon water also helps relieve indigestion or ease an upset stomach.

How to prepare: Add the juice of ½ lemon per 8 ounces of warm water. The temperature should be comfortable for you to drink it down; it should not be so hot that you have to sip it. This is because the vitamin C in the juice is easily destroyed by high temperatures.

Wait twenty minutes after drinking the lemon water before drinking or eating anything else.

Attention: the acids in lemon can eat away at your tooth enamel. To prevent this, drink lemon water before brushing your teeth — the overnight bacteria will protect your teeth a bit. Drink from a straw and rinse the mouth well (you can rinse your mouth with water mixed with a little baking soda to neutralize any acid that might be left on your teeth if you prefer) – avoid brushing your teeth right after drinking the lemon water.

Warm Lemon Water

Our body has been designed by nature to optimally function when the pH of our blood is 7.4 (slightly alkaline). To keep us alive, and to maintain the balance our body works through neutralization.

Our pH is determined mostly by what we eat and drink, but it can also be affected by stress, worry, anger, and even by how much sleep (or lack of it) and exercise (or lack of it) we get.
